The International Agency for Research on Cancer is celebrating its 60th anniversary!

This year, IARC is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The past six decades have been dedicated to understanding the causes of cancer and how to prevent it. This is also an opportunity to celebrate 60 years of international collaboration. Since 1965, the Agency has been interdisciplinary, bringing together expertise in laboratory disciplines, epidemiology, and biostatistics to identify the causes of cancer, which will lead to preventive measures aimed at reducing the burden and suffering associated with the disease.

Why celebrate 60 years?

Celebrating IARC’s 60th anniversary is also celebrating 60 years of international cooperation.

The concept of cooperation is intrinsic to IARC; it is at the heart of our activities. IARC has 29 Participating States that contribute to and support our research. According to projections from the IARC Global Cancer Observatory, the annual number of new cancer cases worldwide is expected to increase by 60% by 2040, reaching 30.2 million new cases, which could result in 16.3 million deaths from cancer per year. This increase is likely to disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries, which are already facing numerous economic, health, and social challenges. In these countries, diagnosis is often late, care is rarely accessible (especially financially), and patients’ chances of survival are reduced.

Open Science

What matters most to IARC is the impact we can have on public health by providing access to publications, data, and training and by hosting regular conferences, some of which are open to the general public.

IARC is

More than 400 members of personnel
From 67 countries
Including more than 150 early-career researchers
More than 150 countries collaborating with IARC

The scientific work of IARC is structured around four Pillars, which are four major questions about cancer prevention that guide our research:

1.

Data for Action: Who develops cancer, where, and when?

Understanding the Causes: Why do people develop cancer?

2.

3.

From Understanding to Prevention: How can we prevent cancer effectively?

Knowledge Mobilization: How can we mobilize and share our knowledge?

4.

What is IARC?

During the past 60 years, IARC has transformed science into concrete actions for prevention, awareness, and screening.
